Organizations that have qualified to Round 2 will be invited to give a short presentation – 8 minutes for the NZ Best Practice Competition and 20 minutes for New Zealand’s Environmental, Social, & Governance Award. This does not seem long but it is surprising how much content can be covered in a well-crafted presentation.
The time of each presentation will be shown on the Event Programme.
Guidelines
- Practice your presentation to ensure it lasts no longer than the specified time.
- The following is a recommended outline for a Best Practice Competition presentation:
- Slide No.1 – Name of best practice, organization, country & name of presenter(s), position(s)
- Slide No.2 – Overview of the organization e.g. size, location, products and service
- Slide No.3 – What exactly is the best practice? Describe your best practice in one sentence. Describe the best practice clearly so that the scope/boundaries of the practice is clear (therefore what is included as part of the practice and what is excluded?).
- Slide No.4 – Level of deployment
- Slides No.5 – Level of innovation
- Slide No.6 – Results achieved
- Slide No.7 – Evidence it is a best practice (use of benchmarking/comparison of results/peer reviewed)
- Slide No.8 – Review/next steps planned
In terms of the number of slides the above is a guideline. Your main consideration is to stick within the time-line. The majority of your time should be spent on Level of deployment, Level of innovation, Results achieved, Evidence and Review as it is these areas that are assessed. However, prior to this, you need to explain clearly what is your best practice. Slides 1 and 2 should be brief – do not dwell on these.
- For the Best Practice Competition your written entry and presentation will be assessed on; Clarity of best practice, Level of deployment, Level of innovation, Results achieved, Evidence it is a best practice and Review/next steps planned.

In terms of the number of slides the above is a guideline. Your main consideration is to stick within the time-line. The majority of your time should be spent on Slides 3 to 14 in the example above. Slides 1 and 2 should be brief – do not dwell on these.

- Include photographs or videos in your presentation. Pictures are worth a thousand words.
- During your presentation, talk clearly and smoothly. Clarity is of the essence.
- Rehearse well even if you are an experienced presenter. Your audience is sophisticated, thus, reading from slides during a presentation is deemed unprofessional.
- More than one person can deliver the presentation but in this case it is even more important to practice the presentation to ensure it does not exceed the specified time limit.
- Examples of past winner presentations are shown here. More examples are shown in the Best Practice Improvement Resource – BPIR.com including written applications.
- The organizers are available to provide advice and comment on your presentation slides if sent 10 days or more prior to the presentation date. This will assist all entrants to deliver a strong presentation. Send your presentations for checking to competition@coer.org.nz
Rules for pre-recorded presentations (Only Required for Round 2 of the NZ Best Practice Competition as it joins the International Best Practice Competition)
- Send your final pre-recorded presentation to competition@coer.org.nz using https://wetransfer.com or a google share folder at least 5 days before the scheduled presentation date for review to ensure compliance with the presentation guidelines. All pre-recorded files should be in MP4 format. The chairman of the session will play your pre-recorded presentation at the event.
- For pre-recorded presentations it is recommended that your presentation shows your slides and includes a small image of the presenter to give a human touch to the presentation. Most on-line meeting software such as Zoom offers this capability. Refer to the image shown as a good example.
- Embed any videos in your pre-recorded presentation.
- Pre-recorded presentations have a time limit of 8 minutes for the International Best Practice Competition. If your presentation runs over the specified time we will allow an additional 30 seconds and then stop the presentation.
- Whilst your presentation is pre-recorded you need to attend the session to answer the judges’ questions. Failure to turn- up at your allocated Q&A timeslot is likely to adversely affect your best practice star rating
